Ask an Astrophysicist

This is awesome. In a reaction to the question about whether or not gamma ray jets created by η carinae going hypernova would affect human beings the answer boils down to: it depends.

<spoiler>
The major part of the gamma energy outburst is expected to become emitted along the rotational axis of η carinae which does not point anywhere near our solar system. More precisely, the tilt between the rotational axis of η carinae and the direct path from earth to η carinae is around 45 degrees.

According to the what seems to be existing knowledge about hypernova events, the probability of disastrous impacts on the population on earth should be low.

However, if you somehow manage to make it to a place near the rotational axis of η carinae you better bring your lead underwear come the nova.
